What We Do

Scoring Legislators

Know the score! You can help hold our decision-makers accountable by knowing how they voted on key environmental issues.

Accountability is the backstop for advocacy work. It means letting citizens know how their decision-makers are voting on the issues they care about. And ultimately, it means electing people that care about these issues.

NCLCV holds legislators to their word when they say they support environmental protection by releasing a "Scorecard" each legislative session that identifies key environmental votes and how each member of the General Assembly fared when voting.

Conservation PAC considers each incumbent's score, along with other information, in deciding which candidates we endorse. And we hope this information will also help you in deciding who to cast your vote for.

Of course, Scorecards aren't perfect...Scorecards are a good indicator of where our legislators stand on important issues affecting our environment, but they are only a snapshot of the complexities of the legislative landscape. For example, scores are not able to reflect other decisions and actions that legislators make during a session, such as: bill sponsorship or co-sponsorship, whether the legislator actively championed for or against specific legislation, whether they worked to build support for an issue, or whether they were able to buck party or leadership pressure on behalf of the environment. Also, the votes listed are not a comprehensive list of all votes taken on environmental bills, but represent key issues for the environmental community. Votes chosen may not be the final roll call vote, but the most revealing for each bill.

So it is also important for you to ask tough questions of your elected officials and candidates in order to keep the pressure on them to make the right decisions on environmentally friendly legislation.
